About the game

CHOCH is a small, fast game about getting through rooms that want you gone. You play a web crawler, drawn as a tiny glowing spider, sent into a private network to find a page that has vanished from the web. The network does not like visitors: every room is a different kind of trap, and touching anything red sends you back to the last checkpoint.

There are eighteen of these rooms, one after another up a long corridor. One is full of spinning crosses, another of pulsing laser grids, waving bars, rings of boxes that open and close, or fractals that never sit still. Most of them can be crossed by watching the pattern for a few seconds and then moving in one clean line. A short story plays at the start and the whole run takes around ten to twenty minutes.

Everything is drawn by two shader programs, so the lasers glow and the screen bends like an old monitor. The music and the sound effects are made by the code as you play. CHOCH came third in js13kGames 2020, a contest where the entire game had to fit in 13 kilobytes.

Playing it here

Click Play, then click once inside the game so the keyboard works. Watch the intro, press Enter at the menu and start moving. You steer with the keys and the spider keeps gliding, so small taps work better than holding a direction. The green lines mark checkpoints: once you cross one, you restart from there. Progress is not saved between visits. A gamepad works, and the game needs WebGL, which any recent browser has.

Controls

Input Action
Arrow keys, WASD or ZQSD steer the spider; navigate the menu
Enter pick a menu entry; skip a cutscene
Esc go back to the menu
gamepad stick or d-pad to steer, as the game lists in its menu

A few things worth knowing

Watch first, move second. Each room repeats a pattern. Wait for a full cycle before you set off; the gaps are usually wider than they look.

Light touches. Short taps on the keys let you drift through a gap without overshooting. Holding a direction makes the spider pick up speed.

Green is safe. Checkpoints are the green lines between rooms. Orange and red glow means danger, white-blue walls only block you.

FAQ

Does it have sound? Yes, music and effects. Turn the volume down if you are in a quiet place.

Is it hard? Some rooms ask for patience, but the checkpoints are close together, so you never lose much.
