About the game
Compact Conflict is a board game of conquest squeezed into 13 KB. A new map of irregular regions is drawn at random for every match, each player starts with a single temple, and the game lasts a fixed number of turns. When time runs out, whoever holds the most regions wins.
Each turn gives you three moves. A move sends an army to a neighbouring region; if it is occupied, the two sides fight, and you only take the region if every defender falls, otherwise your army falls back. Temples are the heart of everything: after each turn every temple you own produces a fresh soldier, neutral temples can be captured, and losing one to an enemy hurts. Holding regions and keeping soldiers praying at temples earns faith, the game's currency, which you spend on extra soldiers or on blessing a temple with one of the four elements.
The elements were the theme of js13kGames 2014, and here each one bends a rule. Water raises your income, Fire gives your attacks soldiers that cannot die, Air grants extra moves every turn, and Earth makes a region kill a number of invaders before the battle even starts. Each blessing has two levels, temple and cathedral, and a temple can be rebuilt to switch to a different element.
Jakub Wasilewski made Compact Conflict for js13kGames 2014. This is version 1.2.2, which he released after the competition with soldier counts on large armies and a later fix to the computer players.
Playing it here
Click Play and the game opens with a five-card tutorial; read it, or press "Got it!" to go straight to the setup screen. There you choose who plays each of the four colours (off, human or computer), how clever the computer is (Nice, Rude, Mean or Evil) and how many turns the game lasts (9, 12, 15 or endless), and you can ask for another map before pressing "Start game". Several human players can share the same screen, taking turns at the mouse. The game remembers your last setup in the browser.

A few things worth knowing
Spread out early. Every region adds to your faith and to the final count, so the first turns are best spent grabbing empty land.
Soldiers on temples pay twice. They defend your most important region and add to your income at the same time.
Earth on the front line. A temple with the Earth blessing is very hard to take, which makes it a good anchor next to an aggressive neighbour.
