About the game

Concentration Room is the classic memory game on a home console: a table full of face-down cards, two flips per turn, and a pair you keep only when both emblems match. Miss, and both cards go back face down, so the whole game is about remembering where you have already looked.

The table grows with the difficulty, from a quick 10-card warm-up to a full spread of 72 cards. The story mode wraps the matches in a small comedy about a lab accident: you start alone at the table and then challenge other people stuck in the same quarantine, one at a time. Solitaire, two-player and versus-computer modes are there for when you just want to play.

Playing it here

This is a homebrew game made for the NES: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. It runs here in jsnes, an NES emulator written in JavaScript. Click Play now, then press Enter on the title screen.

F2 saves the current state of the game in this browser and F4 brings it back. A gamepad also works. For two players, the second player can use the numeric keypad or a second gamepad, or simply take turns on the same keys.

Controls

Key NES button Action
Arrow keys Control Pad move the cursor, choose in menus
X A turn the card over, confirm
Z B jump the cursor to a random card
X + Z A + B take your turn in a 2-player game
Enter Start start, confirm
Shift or Ctrl Select show the credits on the title screen
F2 / F4 — save / load the state

Player 2 uses the numeric keypad: 8, 2, 4 and 6 to move, 7 for A, 9 for B, 1 for Start and 3 for Select.

A few things worth knowing

Start small. The difficulty sets how many cards are on the table: 10, 20, 36, 52 or 72. A small table is a good way to learn the emblems.

Flip new cards first. When you are not sure of a pair, turning over a card you have never seen gives you information either way.

In versus games, half wins. A match ends as soon as one player has taken half of the pairs. The author explains why: the last pair takes no skill, so it does not count.
