About the game

Connection gives you a grid of tiles marked with four shapes, a cross, a triangle, a square and a circle, and a short sequence of those shapes at the top of the screen. Your job is to find that sequence on the board by dragging through neighbouring tiles in the right order. Get it right and the tiles you used vanish, new ones drop in from above, a new sequence appears and the score goes up.

The twist comes from the theme of js13kGames 2020, "404". Sometimes the sequence simply is not on the board, and then the right answer is the big NOT FOUND button at the bottom. A wrong trace just shakes the tiles, but a countdown ends the game and a wrong NOT FOUND takes two seconds off it, so every round is a quick decision between looking a little harder and declaring the pattern missing.

The levels add one idea at a time: "3 in a row" starts with three-tile sequences, then "Get square", "High five" and "Six pack" ask for longer and trickier shapes. Good scores unlock the next level, the endless Arcade mode and a shelf of trophies.

Federico Tibaldo made Connection for js13kGames 2020, with his own pixel font and sprites.

Playing it here

Click Play and wait a few seconds for the short animated intro, then choose Levels. Only the first level is open at the start; the Trophies screen lists the score that unlocks each of the others. The game saves your best scores, unlocked levels and trophies in your browser, so they are still there next time.

Controls

Input Action
press and drag over the tiles trace a sequence (each step up, down, left or right)
NOT FOUND declare that the sequence is not on the board
click a menu item choose levels, arcade or trophies
drag or mouse wheel on menus scroll long lists

A few things worth knowing

Start from the rarest shape. If the sequence contains a shape that appears only once or twice on the board, look there first; it narrows the search much faster.

No diagonals. Each step goes up, down, left or right, and a sequence can be traced from either end, so try reading it backwards too.

Do not be afraid of NOT FOUND. The game is built around it, and spotting an impossible board quickly is as much a skill as tracing a path.
