About the game
Counterfeit Monkey is set on Anglophone Atlantis, an island nation that has built its whole economy on linguistic manipulation. Its machines can insert letters, synthesize words and shrink things with a suffix, and when a word changes, the object changes with it.
You are a smuggler and industrial spy whose cover has just been blown. The police are stretched thin by a national holiday, you are wearing a deeply inconvenient disguise, and your main asset is a full-alphabet letter remover. Point it at something, choose a letter, and the thing becomes a different thing.
Almost every puzzle is a piece of wordplay, and the game is generous about it: it understands an enormous range of words and rewards curiosity. It is long, by the standards of the form, and widely considered one of the best works of interactive fiction ever written. It won the XYZZY Award for Best Game in 2012.

A few things worth knowing
Read names carefully. Objects are puzzles in themselves. If a word contains another word, there is often a use for it.
THINK is your notebook. It keeps track of what you are trying to do, which helps a lot in a game this size.
Ask for a hint before giving up. HINT ABOUT works on individual objects, so you can get a small nudge without spoiling the rest.
