About the game

You were a member of the noble Grimwin family, and you were not a favorite. Long after your death the family has come to an end, and you were buried in its crypt. But something stopped you from passing on to the spirit world. Now you wake up as a spirit in your own tomb, with a curse that one of your relatives put on you, and one goal: to find that person and take your revenge.

What makes it different is that the spirit is weak, and bodies are strong. You can stay in spirit form for a limited time only (the "spirit stability" at the top of the screen), and you cannot do much in it, but you can jump into the body of a creature next to you and use its health, its attacks and its items. The crypt is full of rooms with spike traps, levers, pressure plates and one-way mazes, and getting through often means choosing the body that suits the job, and leaving it behind when it is no longer useful. If you lose your body, you are a spirit again and have to find the next one.

The game starts with a short questionnaire about your life: how you reacted when a noble boy bullied your cousin, how you asked to be executed, and so on. Your answers set the numbers that you start with (spirit stability, spirit power and willpower), so every character begins a little different. It was made in a week by Team Kalamakkara for the 7 Day Roguelike Challenge 2018, with a tileset, a bitmap font and a title picture that come in the same repository.

Playing it here

Click Play and the game loads in the page (about 2 MB, downloaded only when you press the button). On the title screen press any key, answer the questions with the number keys (Space continues after the text), and the game begins. The game needs a keyboard. It makes no requests outside this site. There is no save: a run lasts as long as the spirit does.

Tips

Watch your stability. Out of a body you can only last for a limited time: the "spirit stability" number in the top right shows how long, so when it is low, find a body.

Look before you push. The D key tells what is next to you; clicking a tile also gives a description.

Collect orbs. They increase the power of your spirit.

Some bodies are not meant to fight. A weak creature can be the right key for a puzzle, and you can leave it behind afterward with Shift and an arrow.

FAQ

Is it hard? The first rooms tell you what to do with on-screen tutorial boxes, and the dangers grow from there. Dying ends the run, and you start again.

Can I save? No. It is a short game made for a game jam.

Does it work on a phone? No: it needs a keyboard.

Credits and licence

Crypt of Grimwin was made by Team Kalamakkara (maqqr and friends) for the 7 Day Roguelike Challenge 2018 and is free software under the MIT licence. The code, the tileset, the font and the pictures are all in the team's repository, under the same licence. The game uses the PixiJS and rot.js libraries (MIT and BSD-3-Clause), jQuery and a few small packages, whose licences are in the licence file linked from this page. We build the game from the authors' source with their own build tool (webpack), changing only the build configuration, and host that source next to the game.
