About the game
Death Game is a platform shooter with one question: how far can you get? Each stage is a set of rooms built at random, with ledges to jump between, zombies to shoot and a door to reach at the other end. The stages get longer and tougher as you go, and when it ends, the game over screen tells you which stage you reached.
The shooting is the interesting part. Your gun holds only a few bullets, shown as a row of marks at the top, so wild firing leaves you empty at the wrong moment. Reloading takes time, and zombies do not wait. The art is deliberately simple, with flat colours and slim, hand-drawn characters, and a short tutorial at the start teaches movement, jumping, shooting and reloading as you walk along the first stage.
Luke Cann made Death Game for js13kGames 2022, where the whole game had to fit in 13 KB and the theme was Death. It runs with the keyboard, a gamepad or touch controls.
Playing it here
Click Play, then Start on the title screen (Full Screen is there too). Move with A and D or the arrow keys, jump with W or Up, shoot with X or J and reload with Z, K or R. A gamepad works too: the d-pad or left stick moves, Up or A jumps, a trigger or B shoots and X or Y reloads. The game does not save.
Controls
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| A / D, Left / Right | move |
| W, Up | jump |
| X, J | shoot |
| Z, K, R | reload |
| gamepad | d-pad or stick to move, Up or A to jump, trigger or B to shoot, X or Y to reload |
| touch | on-screen controls |
A few things worth knowing
Count your bullets. A reload takes time, so do it while nothing is close.
Use the ledges. Jumping up gives you a line of fire over the zombies.
Keep going. Each stage is random, so a hard one is no reason to stop.
