About the game

You are a grave digger in a small strip of graveyard, and you have a job: every skeleton buried in the ground has to be dug up before the exit door will let you through. The trouble is that skeletons do not like being dug up. Each one you free wakes up and walks toward you, and if it reaches you the level is over.

Each level is a short, tile-based puzzle seen from the side, ten tiles wide and eight high. You take one step at a time, and so do the skeletons, so everything is a matter of order: which grave to open first, where to stand when you do it, how far away the nearest skeleton will be, and whether you can reach the door before it catches up. A grave opens in two steps. You dig it with the shovel while you stand on top of it, and the skeleton climbs out only once you step away from that tile. Soon there are holes in the ground, where you and the skeletons fall through and come back at the top of the screen, teleporters that move you across the map, and several skeletons that block each other in narrow places. The skeletons obey gravity too, so a skeleton that walks off a ledge is out of your way for a while, and the ground itself, which blocks you, blocks them as well.

There are 27 levels, from a single skeleton and a door in the first screens to long maze-like ones near the end. The game never asks you to be quick, only to be careful, and a restart is a single key.

It was made by TanTanDev in Rust, as a first project for learning the language, using a small game library built for the web, and it was originally released on itch.io.

Playing it here

The game runs in the page. Click Click to play to start it; the sound starts then. It plays with the keyboard, and it also understands swipes, with a finger or the mouse: swipe in a direction to step, dig down or go up, and tap anywhere to restart after a fall or a bite. It does not save your progress, so reloading the page starts from the first level. The download is about 0.6 MB.

Controls

Key Action
Left, Right (or A, D) walk one tile
Down (or S) dig the grave under your feet; the skeleton rises when you step off
Up (or W) go through the exit door, or use a teleporter you stand on
R restart the level
M turn the sound on or off (clicking the speaker icon in the corner does the same)
Swipe on a touch screen, or dragging with the mouse: left, right, down (dig) and up (door)

Tips

Count the steps. A skeleton moves when you move. Before you dig, count how many steps it needs to reach you and how many you need to reach the door.

Dig, then walk away. The skeleton only gets out when you leave the tile above its grave, so you choose when it starts to chase you. Plan which way you will go before you dig.

Holes are tools. Falling is not always bad: a fall can take you past a skeleton, and a skeleton that drops through a hole comes back at the top of the screen, which can put it far from you.

Use R freely. A restart costs nothing, so try a plan, see where it breaks, and try another.

Credits and licence

Dig Escape was made by TanTanDev. The repository carries the Apache License 2.0, and its README says the only outside assets are the Kenney fonts, which are public domain (CC0); the pictures and sounds are the author's own. The full licence texts, the licences of the Rust libraries compiled into the game, and the source with the build script are linked from this page.

FAQ

The door does not open. Every grave in the level has to be dug first; the graves that are still buried blink when you try the door too early.

It does not react to the keys. Click once on the game to give it the focus.

Can I skip a level? No, the levels go in order. Restart with R if you are stuck.
