About the game

Two sheep, one pasture and a fence that does not want to let them out. Down Sheep is a top-down puzzle game in which you steer both animals, one at a time, to the exit of every level. The sheep cannot do everything alone: one can stand on a pad to keep a gate open while the other walks through, a feather lets a sheep leap over a gap in the ground, and an axe cuts down a tree that blocks the way. The trick is working out who has to carry what, and in which order.

The first levels are short tutorials that introduce one idea each, and the later ones combine them. Along the way you can pick up flowers, and the sheep comment on the situation with a dry sense of humour. The game was made by Alexander Griffith for the Fall 2020 Lisp Game Jam, and is written in the Fennel language on top of LÖVE.

Playing it here

Click Play and choose New Game from the menu, or pick any level from Load Level. The game has no save: Continue only works within the current visit, and reloading the page starts from the beginning, but every level can be opened directly from Load Level, so you never have to replay the ones you finished.

The game runs in the LÖVE game framework, compiled to WebAssembly.

A few things worth knowing

Both sheep have to get out. A level ends when both are standing on the exit, so think about where the second sheep will be when the first one moves on.

Pads and gates work together. A sheep standing on a pad holds a matching gate open. Some pads are heavy and need a weight on them rather than a sheep.

Read the hints. The sheep speak up when you step on something new, and what they say is usually a hint about what to try next.

Credits and licence

Down Sheep was made by Alexander Griffith, who wrote the code and drew the art. The music is "Thunder Hoodie Beats - Isolated" by Thunder Hoodie Beats (Creative Commons Attribution 4.0), the fonts Avara and Inconsolata are under the SIL Open Font License, and the sound effects are by Nenad Simic and Lamoot (Creative Commons Attribution 3.0). The game uses the libraries lume (rxi), anim8 and bump (Enrique García Cota), tiny-ecs and the Fennel compiler (Calvin Rose), all MIT. The code is released under the GNU General Public License, version 3 or later, and the art under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0. The build served here differs from the original in two small ways: the Fennel code is compiled to Lua ahead of time, as in the author's own makefile, and one sound effect without a stated origin was replaced by another one. Its complete source code and the patch are hosted alongside the game, and the licence texts are linked from this page.
