About the game

You are Sir Jelly, the intrepid Knight of the Square Table, who happens to be a gelatinous cube. The kingdom is a handful of connected screens: a yellow castle, a black castle, a garden, a labyrinth and a dragon's lair. Your mission is to bring the Holy Chalice of Yendor, which sits inside the black castle, back to the yellow one.

The castles are locked, so the first thing to find is a key. There is one for each castle, and a sword is lying around somewhere too. Walk up to an object and Sir Jelly picks it up; hold a button and he drops it. He can only carry one thing at a time, so every trip means thinking about what goes where and in which order. Dragons that look suspiciously like ducks roam the kingdom. They chase you, they go after the chalice and the keys, and the sword scares them off. If one catches you, Sir Jelly is sent back to the yellow castle and drops whatever he was carrying.

You win by walking into the yellow castle with the chalice in your hands.

The game is a tribute to a classic Atari 2600 adventure: the same idea of a simple world where one item opens the next door, rebuilt for the Master System with its own cube hero, rooms and monsters. It was written by Haroldo de Oliveira Pinheiro for the SMS Power! coding competition in 2018.

Playing it here

This is a homebrew game made for the Master System: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. It runs here in Gearsystem, a Master System emulator compiled to WebAssembly. Click Play now and the adventure starts at once, in front of the yellow castle.

F2 saves the full state of the emulator in this browser and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too.

Controls

Key Master System button Action
Arrow keys D-pad walk in four directions
(touching an object) — pick it up
Z or X Button 1 or 2 drop the object you are carrying
F2 / F4 — save / load the emulator state

A few things worth knowing

Start with the key. A golden key lies on the very first screen, next to the yellow castle. Pick it up and carry it to the gate.

One object at a time. If you want something else, drop what you hold first, then step away from it so Sir Jelly doesn't grab it again.

Leave the screen to change rooms. Walking off an edge takes you to the neighbouring screen.

Respect the dragons. They hunt you down, so keep an exit in mind whenever you enter a room that has one. The sword keeps them at a distance, so it is worth finding.
