About the game
Dungeon Cards is a solitaire for one player. The dungeon is a deck of forty cards, and four of them are always face up in front of you. You have twenty hit points. Each card is one of three things: a monster, which costs you hit points equal to its number, a weapon, which you must pick up and use, or a potion, which heals you by its number up to the maximum of twenty. You walk through the room one card at a time and when the room is nearly empty the next cards are dealt. If you reach the end of the deck alive you win, and if your health reaches zero you are dead, and the game shows a final score.
The trick is in the weapons. A weapon takes damage off a monster, so a good one makes a fight cheap, but a weapon that has beaten a monster can then only be used on monsters of equal or lower number. That makes the order of the cards you pick the real puzzle: a weak weapon kept for the weak monsters, a strong one wasted on a small creature, a potion saved for when you need it.
Playing it here
This is a homebrew game made for the Game Boy: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. It runs here in binjgb, a Game Boy emulator written in C and compiled to WebAssembly. Click Play now and press Enter on the title screen. F2 saves the emulator state in this browser and F4 brings it back.

A few things worth knowing
Count the deck. The number under the face-down deck is how many cards are left, so you know how long you have to live.
Match weapons to monsters. Use a weapon on a monster of equal or lower number than the last one it beat, or fight bare-handed when the monster is too big for it.
Do not heal for nothing. A potion above your maximum health is wasted, so take monsters first when you are close to twenty.
Credits and licence
This game is the Game Boy implementation "Scoundrel" by Aviv Beeri, made for the GB Compo 2025 game jam and released under the zlib licence. It is based on the solo card game of the same name designed by Zach Gage and Kurt Bieg. Because the designers' page does not state terms for other versions, this site shows the generic name Dungeon Cards on the title screen. The author does not publish a ready-made ROM in the repository, so the one served here was compiled from its source code with RGBDS, changing only the title. The full licence text is linked from this page.
