About the game

Dunkman is a tiny arcade game about one thing: the slam dunk. A short intro with typed-out dialogue sets the mood, and then you control a player moving toward the hoop while defenders try to block you. Your arrow keys move the player's arms and the ball around the screen, and a counter at the top shows how much of the dunk you have completed. A "LIVES" counter at the bottom counts how many times you may be stopped.

If the defenders get you, the game cuts to a gloomy "if only you had passed the ball" screen and then back to the title. If you make it, the Dunkman gets his moment, with a big slam scene and a shout.

Playing it here

Dunkman was made for TIC-80, a fantasy console: an imaginary 1980s-style computer with a 240 by 136 screen and 16 colours, for which independent developers write new games. Cong Xu made it in 2020 for Ludum Dare 46, and it runs here in the official TIC-80 web player. Click Play and wait for the title screen; press any arrow key or button to go through the intro text, which is typed out slowly, and then play with the arrow keys. Esc opens the TIC-80 menu. The game is in English.

A few things worth knowing

Watch the defenders, not the ball. Their reach is what stops you, so look for the gaps.

Move early. The player takes a moment to travel to a new position, so start before the defender is already there.

It is short. A full run is over in a minute or so, so the goal is to get it right in one go.
