About the game

Electric Organ is a turn-based roguelike set in a city that something has corrupted. You play a survivor whose body is as much a toolkit as a liability: the organs inside you decide how much damage you can take, how long you can hold your breath, how well you digest food, and even which weapons you carry. Some of those weapons are biological pistols and shotguns attached to your own flesh, and they pay for every shot with your health.

The aim is to reach the fourth level of the city, defeat the Corruptor at its heart, and get out alive. The levels are joined by elevator shafts, and enemies cannot follow you through them, which makes each elevator a small refuge. Along the way you scavenge, collect the money of the city (CyberCoinz; some organs are embedded and cost money to remove), and keep an eye on a row of meters: health, oxygen, food, poison and radiation. When radiation fills up you mutate. Organs have traits too: some are cybernetic and need a power core, some are vampiric and only work after you have drunk blood, some multiply, some are damaged, some may vanish at any moment.

The game ends one of two ways: you can save the city, or you can take the corrupted heart for yourself and become something else.

Playing it here

Click Play, then press any key when the game asks (the browser only lets it start the music after a key press). The city is drawn with coloured text on a grid that scales to the frame. A sidebar shows your hands, your meters and a description of whatever the mouse points at, and a message log runs along the bottom. It needs a keyboard, saves your run in this browser only and makes no requests outside this site.

Tips

Watch the hearts. Each heart raises your maximum health, and with none you die; think twice before trading one away.

Use the elevators. Enemies stay behind when you take one, so a lift is the place to catch your breath.

Read the organ traits. The help screen explains cybernetic, vampiric, radioactive and the rest; the wrong trait on the right organ is the difference between a strong build and a dead end.

FAQ

Is it gory? It is body horror told with letters and symbols on a coloured grid: there are organs, blood and mutation in the text, but no realistic images.

Does it have sound? Yes, a synthesised soundtrack and effects generated by the game as it runs. It starts after your first key press.

Can I use a mouse? The mouse shows descriptions when you hover; the game itself is played with the keyboard.

Does it save? The game keeps its save data in this browser only; we did not find a Continue option on the title screen after reloading, so treat each visit as a fresh run.

Credits and licence

Electric Organ was made by Stephen Sherratt (gridbugs) for the 7DRL Challenge 2024 and is released under the MIT licence. It is written in Rust and compiled to WebAssembly by us from the author's source at a fixed commit, with the libraries he published (chargrid, caw and others) and the other open source crates listed in the licence file. The pixel font is PxPlus IBM CGA (and its thin variant) by VileR, from the Ultimate Oldschool PC Font Pack at int10h.org, under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International licence (CC BY-SA 4.0). The files are the ones in the game's repository, served unchanged. We replaced the author's web page with our own (it blocks connections outside this site, keeps the saved game under its own key and scales the display to the frame). The licence texts, the source and the build script are linked from this page.
