About the game

Elematter is a tower defence game built around the four classical elements. Enemies march along a winding path through a dark grid, and you stop them by building towers on the empty squares beside it. There are four kinds of tower, Earth, Water, Air and Fire, and four kinds of enemy to match. Each tower does half again as much damage to one element: Water puts out Fire, Fire scorches Earth, Earth brings down Air and Air disperses Water. The towers also differ in range, damage and rate of fire, and each can be upgraded twice.

The twenty waves start with a single element and soon mix several, and the bar at the bottom of the screen shows what the next wave will bring, so you can build the right counters before it arrives. Towers are paid for with fragments, earned by destroying enemies. If you feel confident, you can send the next wave early for a bonus. Every enemy that reaches the end of the path costs one of your thirteen lives.

Jack Rugile made Elematter for js13kGames 2014, whose theme was the four elements: Earth, Water, Air and Fire. The whole interface is built from HTML elements and CSS, with sound effects generated by jsfxr.

Playing it here

This is the version the author published in his repository, which differs from the competition upload only by a comma in the wave table. It was designed for an 800 by 600 window, and here it is scaled to fit the frame. Click Play inside the game to start the first wave whenever you are ready; the ×1, ×2 and ×3 buttons change the speed. Nothing is saved between visits.

A few things worth knowing

Read the wave bar. Knowing which elements are coming tells you which tower to build next. A tower of the wrong element still works, just less well.

Build at the corners. Squares where the path bends back on itself let a single tower reach the same enemies several times.

Reclaiming is not a loss. Selling a tower returns three quarters of everything spent on it, so you can swap an element when the waves change.
