About the game
Earth can no longer support life, and the humans are leaving. A rocket is on its way up, a fox cub is on its way somewhere else, and the game follows the fox. Escape is a calm side-scrolling platformer in a flat, low-poly style, where the world is a handful of green, brown and grey polygons and the camera glides slowly along the ground.
The journey has three parts: a forest, a farm and a city, each built from simple models and lit with soft colours. On the way you jump over gaps, push and pull objects to reach higher places and open the way forward. The last screen ends with a message that sums up what the game is about.
Staś Małolepszy and Michał Budzyński made Escape for js13kGames 2021 with their Goodluck game template, where the whole game, zipped, had to fit in 13 kilobytes. The models were drawn in Blender by the authors, and the colours and the soundtrack are generated by code.
Playing it here
Click Play, then click Play Now on the title screen (or on a touch screen, tap it). The game is made for the keyboard but also works with touch. The fox walks with the arrow keys. Nothing is saved between visits.
Controls
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| Left / Right arrow | walk (the fox turns to face the way it goes) |
| Up arrow | jump, when on the ground |
| Space (hold) | grab an object you are touching; let go to drop it |
| Touch | drag a finger to move |
A few things worth knowing
Grab what you can. Boxes and other objects are not just decoration: hold Space against them to carry or pull them, and use them as steps.
Line up your jumps. The fox can only jump from the ground, so get to the edge, check the gap and then go.
Take it in one sitting. It is a short game, built to fit in 13 kilobytes.
