About the game

Evade 2 puts you in the cockpit of a starfighter, looking out through the canopy at a field of stars rushing towards you. Enemy ships drawn in crisp wireframe 3D swoop in from the distance and open fire, and you line them up in your crosshair and shoot back with twin guns that fire alternately from the left and right.

Each wave has a quota of kills. Fill it and the game announces a boss, a much larger ship that takes a lot more punishment, and beating it starts the next wave. Three kinds of enemy, scouts, bombers and assault ships, mix in different ways as the waves go on, and from the fourth wave asteroids join in. The meter on the left is your shield, which every hit wears down; the one on the right is the power for your boost. Both refill between waves. When the shield runs out, the game tells you how many waves you survived.

The team at Modus Create made Evade 2 in about three weeks as a holiday gift for friends and family in December 2017, as a sequel to their first Arduboy game, Evade, and then published its source code for everyone.

Playing it here

This is a homebrew game made for the Arduboy, the open, credit-card-sized handheld with a tiny black-and-white screen: a new game by an independent team, not a commercial release. It runs here in Ardens, an Arduboy emulator. Click Play now and press Z or X when START blinks on the title screen; leave it alone, or press Right, and it shows the enemy roster and the credits.

The game keeps no records of its own, but F2 saves the complete state of the game at any moment, and F4 brings it back, which is handy before a boss. A gamepad works too.

Controls

Key Arduboy button Action
Arrow keys D-pad steer
Z A fire (one shot per press, angled towards the direction held)
Hold X B boost, while the power meter lasts
Right (title screen) D-pad next attract screen
F2 / F4 — save / load the state

A few things worth knowing

Tap, do not hold. Each press of the fire button is one shot, so rhythm matters more than holding the button down.

Keep moving. Enemy shots are aimed at where you are; steering constantly makes you much harder to hit, and asteroids cost far more shield than bullets.

Boost sparingly. The boost doubles your speed but drains its meter fast. Keep some in reserve for when a wave gets crowded.
