About the game
In the hit game show Fire & Fondness, young couples prove their love the hard way: one partner has to cross a room full of flamethrowers to reach the other. Every move you make is a turn, and each flamethrower counts down the turns until it fires. When it does, the flames fill every tile they can reach, and the only safe places are behind something solid, such as a closed door. The trick is to time your path so that the doors between you and the fire are shut at the right moment.
Each level is a small puzzle of levers, doors and counters. Pulling a lever opens some doors and closes others, so the route that gets you to your partner is usually the one that leaves you exposed. Later seasons add pressure plates, trapdoors, ice, rocks, movers, teleporters, bombs, the in-laws and a dog that does not like to be woken up. A flower in each level is an optional extra for the romantic, and every level has a par for the number of steps.
John Gabriel made the original Fire & Fondness for the Godot Community Game Jam in 2018, where it won, and released this sequel in 2020 with a new soundtrack, thirty-five levels in five "seasons" and a set of very hard challenge levels for expert players. He wrote the code, drew the pixel art and composed the music, and released the game as free software.
Playing it here
Click Play, then choose Play on the title screen and pick a level from the season list. The first levels introduce each idea with a short note on screen; the settings let you skip those notes, pick the avatars of both contestants, turn on colour-blind assistance (palette or flags), change the background and the camera shake, and set the volume of music and sound effects. Your progress and settings are saved in this browser.
This version was exported by us from the author's source code with the same Godot version he used. The only change is the lettering: the three fonts of the original release came without terms that allow redistribution, so they were replaced with fonts under the SIL Open Font License (Ark Pixel Font and Silkscreen) of a similar pixel style. The game needs a keyboard.
Controls
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| Arrow keys | move one tile (each move is a turn) |
| Space | interact: pull a lever, confirm in menus |
| Backspace | undo the last turn |
| R | restart the level |
| Esc | pause menu, go back |
A few things worth knowing
Watch the counter. The number at the top left is how many turns are left before the flamethrowers fire. Plan your path so you are behind a closed door when it reaches zero.
Undo is free. Backspace takes back a turn at no cost, so experimenting is the fastest way to understand a level.
Wasting a turn is a move. Sometimes the answer is to walk back and forth for a couple of turns and let the fire go off while you are safe.
Flowers and par are optional. You can finish every level without them; collecting the flower and matching the par raise the completion percentage shown on the season list.
