About the game
A small square sits on a glowing point in space, and the screen slowly scrolls down. To stay on the screen you have to jump ("blip") from point to point, and the points are guarded by bars that spin around them. If you hit a bar, or fall to the bottom of the screen, it is over. The game is about surviving for as long as you can and getting a better score each time.
There are two ways to play. Endless mode has no end: the points, the bars and the powerups are generated as you go, and the game gets faster the longer you last. Arcade mode has 100 levels, each one built from a fixed seed so it is always the same, and each asking for more blips than the one before.
Everything in the game is made by code: the shapes are drawn in the program, the letters come from a table of dots, and even the background music is generated while you play. It was inspired by the work of Kenta Cho and has a retro screen look, with a slight curve and scanlines.
Playing it here
Click Play and choose a mode with the Up and Down keys and Space or Return (or with the mouse). Your best scores, the levels you have finished and the settings are saved in this browser and kept when you close the tab. They are not shared between browsers or devices, and clearing the site's data erases them. The original game has an online score table and a check for new versions; we took both out, so this version never connects to anything, and the HI SCORES screen shows only your own scores. The links on the About screen were removed as well.
The game runs in the LÖVE game framework, compiled to WebAssembly.

A few things worth knowing
Time your blips. The screen keeps falling, so waiting is a cost. Jump when the gap between the spinning bars lines up, not when you feel like it.
Collect the powerups with a ping. Star makes you invulnerable for ten seconds, Hourglass slows the bars and the fall, and Phase Shift lets you cross obstacles. Some powerups work by themselves for thirty seconds, like the lightning bolt that saves you from a fall and the score multiplier.
Watch out for the glitch. One pickup, the Ping Glitch, switches off your powerups and your pings for ten seconds. Blipping over any powerup cancels it.
Frequently asked questions
Is my progress saved? Yes, in this browser. It does not follow you to another browser or device.
Is there an online score table? Not in this version. The original sends scores to the author's server, and we removed that: only your own scores are kept here.
Does it work on a phone? It was designed with touch in mind in its original Android version, but we have only tested it with a mouse and keyboard.
Is it free? Yes: Flash-Blip is free software under the MIT License.
Credits and licence
Flash-Blip was made by Aliet Exposito and is released under the MIT License. The game uses no pictures or sound files. The screen effects use the "moonshine" shaders by Matthias Richter and Tim Moore (MIT and public-domain-style licences, with their notices kept in the source). The only change in this version is the removal of everything that connects to the internet. The complete source code, the patch and the licence texts are hosted alongside the game and linked from this page.
