About the game

Food Fighter is a compact arcade shooter. A formation of food (fruit, burgers and other snacks) sweeps across and down the screen, firing back at you, and your ship at the bottom has to clear every last item to move on to the next wave.

Each new wave changes the way the formation moves: it stops, reverses, advances or spreads out. Each wave also brings a different kind of food, and after the fifth pattern the movements repeat. You have three lives, and every enemy is worth more points the further you get.

It was made for the SMS Power! coding competition in 2022, on top of the same engine as the author's Geometry Blaster.

Playing it here

This is a homebrew game made for the Master System: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. It runs here in Gearsystem, a Master System emulator compiled to WebAssembly. Click Play now and the first wave starts right away.

F2 saves the full state of the emulator in this browser and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too.

Controls

Key Master System button Action
Left / Right D-pad move your ship
Z / X Button 1 / 2 shoot; start again after a game over
F2 / F4 — save / load the emulator state

A few things worth knowing

One shot at a time. A new shot only fires once the previous one has hit something or left the screen, so a miss costs time.

Clear one side first. Thinning one end of the formation makes it easier to dodge its return fire.

Scores grow with the waves. Enemies are worth more every few waves, so lives spent early hurt the most.

Credits and licence

Food Fighter was made by Haroldo O. Pinheiro with the devkitSMS. The food sprites come from the "64 16x16 food sprites" pack by Sanglorian, released as CC0 on OpenGameArt, and the text characters come from an example in Maxim's Master System programming tutorial.
