About the game

Fourfold is a calm, thoughtful puzzle about counting. You move a small upright block across an island of tiles floating in the air, from the blue start tile to the green goal. Each press of an arrow moves it one tile in that direction, except that the block keeps a rhythm of four: the first three moves are single steps, and the fourth is a leap that carries it two tiles at once, over a gap or past the goal you were aiming for. A light that fills the block from the bottom shows where you are in the count.

That one rule is enough to make simple shapes tricky. A path that would be trivial with ordinary steps suddenly needs a detour so that the long jump lands where you want it, and stepping off the edge drops the block and starts the level over. Later levels add yellow tiles that hold you only once: as soon as you leave one, it falls away.

Mohammed Saud made Fourfold for js13kGames 2020, whose theme was "404", inspired by puzzle games that make you think about every single move. The 3D scene is drawn with WebGL, the sounds are short piano notes rising with the count, and the whole game fits in 13 kilobytes.

Playing it here

Click Play and choose START to pick a level. The twenty levels unlock one after another, and the furthest one you have reached is remembered in this browser. CUSTOM LEVELS has an editor for building your own and a box where you can paste the code of a level made by someone else. TOUCH CONTROLS adds on-screen arrows for phones and tablets.

The only change from the competition version is that we removed a button that shared your custom level on Twitter; the level's code still appears in a text box, ready to copy.

A few things worth knowing

Count backwards from the goal. Work out on which move of the cycle you need to arrive, then plan the path so the leap falls where it helps.

Use the leap to cross gaps. The two-tile jump is the only way over a one-tile hole, so line it up in front of every gap.

Burn moves when you need to. Stepping back and forth changes where you are in the count without changing where you end up.

Mind the yellow tiles. They vanish after a single visit, so the order in which you cross them matters.
