About the game

FreeKick is a free-kick trainer for football (soccer) in full 3D. The ball sits on the grass about 21 metres from the goal, a wall of players stands in the way and a goalkeeper waits between the posts. You have to find the gap: aim at a spot in or beside the goal, choose where your foot meets the ball, charge the power and let go.

The shot has three parts. First you click or drag on the goal to point the kick. Then you click the ball to choose the point of contact: touching the bottom lifts the ball, touching the top keeps it low, and touching the side makes it curl. Last you hold Space to charge the power and release it to kick; the game shows a suggested power range, and a cyan arrow previews the start of the flight. The ball is simulated with real physics, with air drag and spin, so every choice matters. A very soft kick with almost no spin can wobble in the air like the "knuckleball" shots of the pros.

After a goal, the game offers a cinematic replay from seven camera angles in slow motion, with the real launch speed, the spin and the power on screen. The training panel changes the distance (17 to 30 metres), the sideways position, the size of the wall (one to five players) and the goalkeeper's level, easy, balanced or hard. The advanced settings open the ball physics (mass, drag, curl, bounce and more). On the first visit a short interactive guide teaches aiming, power and curl, and it can be skipped.

Playing it here

Click Play and wait while the game loads (about 18 MB, downloaded only when you press the button). Follow the quick guide, or skip it and press Play in the menu. The game is a 3D scene with a lot of physics, so a computer with a graphics card gives the best frame rate. The interface of the original game is in Turkish with a built-in English translation; here it always starts in English (the menu still lets you switch language).

Tips

Go over the wall low. A low touch under the ball with about 35 to 45 percent power can lift the ball over the wall and drop it before the keeper, from about 21 metres.

Use the curl. A touch on the right side of the ball bends it to the left and the other way round; the ball can go round the wall and back into the goal.

Mind the keeper. The balanced goalkeeper stops easy shots into the corners; try the easy level to learn first.

Watch the replay. The slow-motion angles show how the contact point and the power turned into the flight.

FAQ

Is there a match mode? No. FreeKick is a practice game for free kicks only, with a goals and shots counter.

Does it use real teams or players? No. The players and the mark on the loading screen are the author's own creations.

Does it work on a phone? It needs a mouse and a keyboard, so it is meant for computers.

Credits and licence

FreeKick was made by Ahmet Kayra Maden. The code and the files of the project are under the MIT licence. The seven sound effects were synthesized by the author, and the 3D players were modelled by him in Blender. The grass texture is the "Grass005" material from ambientCG, released under CC0 1.0. The source of this build is linked from this page. The game runs on Godot Engine 4.7.2, under the MIT licence.

Changes made for this site: the game always starts in English, a phone check that needed a script evaluator is replaced by one that uses the engine, and the author's editor plugin is removed. Nothing else in the game was changed.
