Ghosts and Graves

About the game

Ghosts and Graves is a grid logic puzzle. Each level is a patch of cemetery with some graves on it, and every grave has exactly one ghost floating in a square right next to it. The numbers along the edges tell you how many ghosts are in each row and column. Your job is to deduce where all of them are.

Two more rules make it tricky: each ghost belongs to a single grave, and no two ghosts may touch, not even diagonally. You mark squares you are sure are empty by digging them, place ghosts where they must be, and the board fills in until there is only one answer left.

There are 700 levels spread across 25 worlds, and four ways to play: the standard puzzles, Shy Ghost levels where some rows and columns hide their counts, No Shovel levels where you cannot dig to mark empty squares, and Time Attack against the clock.

Playing it here

This is a homebrew game made for the NES: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. It runs here in jsnes, an NES emulator written in JavaScript. Click Play now, press Enter on the title screen and pick a level.

The cartridge saves your progress on its own battery memory, but the player here does not keep that memory between visits. Use F2 to save the state of the game in this browser and F4 to bring it back. A gamepad also works.

A few things worth knowing

Start with the zeros. A row or column with no ghosts can be dug out completely, and so can any square that is not next to a grave.

Ghosts need space. As soon as you place a ghost, the eight squares around it cannot hold another one. Dig them right away.

Arrows help with pairing. Pressing X on a grave turns an arrow that points at its ghost. It does not change the solution, but it keeps track of which ghost belongs to which grave.
