About the game
Gib is a very small robot with a very large problem: all of his systems went offline. At the start of the game he can barely do anything, and the controls are not even available yet. Each item you find in the world brings one ability back online, and every new ability opens a part of the map that was closed before. That loop of finding a power-up and seeing the old level in a new light is the heart of a Metroidvania, and Gib packs it into a handful of screens.
The world is built from chunky pixel-art tiles: grass and dirt on top, brick walls you can drill through once you have the tool, and hazards such as lasers and a worm that guard the narrow passages. There is a double jump to discover, a shot that doubles as a drill, and a boss waiting at the end, so the little adventure has a real beginning, middle and finish.
Attila Horváth made Gib for js13kGames 2018, where the theme was "offline" and the whole game had to fit in 13 KB. He even tested it with a gamepad, and it plays well with one.
Playing it here
Click Play and then click inside the game so it receives the keyboard. You will see "Systems offline" and, a moment later, "Press X to drop". Press X and Gib falls into the first room, where the first item brings the propulsion back online and lets you walk. Once the jump is back, explore the platforms; once the shot is back, try pushing against the bricks. If you run out of lives the game over screen lets you try again. Nothing is saved between visits. The game also speaks its messages with the voice of your browser.
Controls
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| Arrow keys or W A S D | move |
| X or K | drop at the start; jump (press again in the air once you have the double jump) |
| Z or J | shoot; drills through bricks when you push against them |
| gamepad | analog stick to move, A to jump, B to shoot |
A few things worth knowing
Nothing works at first, and that is on purpose. If a key seems to do nothing, you have simply not found that ability yet.
Bricks are doors. Once you can shoot, a brick wall you push against is drilled away. Many shortcuts hide behind them.
Watch the lasers. The hazards have a rhythm. Wait, count, then cross.
