About the game

Godot Open RPG is a small, turn-based role-playing game made by GDQuest as a teaching project: a demo that shows how a classic top-down RPG can be built. That is also what makes it nice to play. It is short, it is clean, and every part of it (walking on a grid, talking to people, fighting) works the way you remember from the old console games.

You begin in the dark with a voice asking for help. A small tin robot is supposed to meet someone in the woods, and then you are in a pixel-art forest with a house, beehives, a fence and a ghost waiting for you. The town has people to talk to, each with a funny line or two and sometimes a coin to give you. Fights are by turns: first you choose what each of your characters will do from menus, then everyone acts and the round plays out, as in the first Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest games.

The art is the Tiny Town pack by Kenney, which gives everything a bright, readable look, and the music is a set of cheerful, looping tracks. The game is a work in progress, so do not expect a long adventure: a few maps, a few conversations and a few fights.

Playing it here

Click Play and wait for the game to load (about 55 MB, downloaded only when you press the button). Click once inside the game so that it gets the keyboard. The intro scene shows a few lines of text; press Space or Enter to advance each one. After that you control the character with the arrow keys or W, A, S, D.

Tips

Talk to everyone. The townspeople give you coins and hints, and several of them react differently the second time.

Read the signs. Some of the funniest text in the game is on signs.

Plan your fights. In combat you choose all your actions first, then watch the round play out, so think about who should attack and who should heal.

FAQ

Does it work on a phone? The game is made for keyboard and mouse.

Is my progress saved? Only your inventory is kept, in your browser. The demo has no save system for the story or the maps.

How long is it? It is a short demo, about as long as a coffee.
