About the game

Green vs Parking Space turns a familiar idea upside down. Instead of plants defending a house from zombies, a patch of grass defends itself from a parking lot. Every few seconds a group of orange traffic cones pops up on the field, wiping out any plant in the way, and wherever cones stand in a row a yellow road roller rumbles across it from the right, turning the grass into asphalt as it goes. Once nearly all the grass is paved over, the game is over.

Your only weapons are two plants, and both cost glucose. The blue flower is cheap (4) and does one job: every few seconds it makes one more glucose, so you plant flowers first, to pay for everything else. The vine is expensive (12) but it reaches out to the squares around it and pulls adjacent cones out of the game for a point each, which also keeps the rollers parked. Money, space and timing are what you manage: a field full of flowers earns well but cannot fight, and a field full of vines runs out of glucose.

Sami Heikkinen and Tero Jäntti made it for js13kGames 2021, where the whole game, including its music, has to fit in 13 KB. The score on the top bar is the number of cones you have caught.

Playing it here

Click Play, then click anywhere on the title screen to start. The game uses the mouse only, so a computer is best. You start with 4 glucose: plant a flower right away. The square under the pointer turns green when you can plant there and red when you cannot. When the grass is gone, click to try again; nothing is saved between visits.

Controls

Input Action
click Flower or Vine pick the plant to place
click a free square of grass plant it (if you have enough glucose)
click, after the game ends start over

A few things worth knowing

Flowers first. The early game is an economy. Plant a couple of flowers before the first cones arrive, so that glucose keeps coming in.

Cones end where vines are. A vine only catches cones next to it, so put them in the rows the cones are likely to attack, not at the edges.

Pavement is forever. A square that has turned to asphalt cannot be planted again. A roller only moves along a row that still has a cone, so clear the cones in a row to stop its roller. A vine needs a few seconds to rest after each catch, so one vine alone cannot keep up with a big wave.
