About the game

Hadal Rush Tic is a short, demanding platformer set in the hadal zone, the deepest part of the ocean. You can walk, but you cannot jump. The only way up, across and out is a grappling hook: throw it at a wall, and as soon as it bites, you are pulled along the line at high speed and cling to the spot where it hit. From there you throw it again, and again, zig-zagging through rooms lined with spikes until you reach the exit.

There are twelve rooms, split into three parts with their own colour scheme, from the cold blues of the first part to a deep red at the end. Springs bounce you upwards, moving currents on the floor push you sideways, and each room hides a pearl, an optional extra that is often placed somewhere awkward. The game keeps count of the pearls you have found, how many times you died and the total time, so it also works as a speedrun challenge.

Playing it here

Hadal Rush Tic was made in one week for TIC-80, a fantasy console: an imaginary 1980s-style computer with a 240 by 136 screen and 16 colours, for which independent developers write new games. It runs here in the official TIC-80 web player. Click Play, choose a part with the arrow keys and press Z to dive in; on a first visit, start with Part 1.

Your time, deaths, pearls and settings are saved in this browser, so you can stop and come back later. Esc opens the TIC-80 menu; its Game Menu entry leads to the part select screen, the options and a How to play screen. A gamepad works directly, and on touch screens an on-screen D-pad and buttons appear.

Controls

Key Action
Left / Right arrows walk; choose a part on the select screen
Z (A button) throw the grappling hook; start the chosen part
Up / Down arrows + Z throw the hook straight up or straight down
S (Y button) restart the current room
Esc TIC-80 menu (Game Menu: part select, options, how to play)
Up / Down arrows, Z, X (options) choose, toggle, go back

A few things worth knowing

The hook only flies in four directions. Without Up or Down held, it goes the way you are facing, so turn with a quick tap on the arrow before you throw.

Holding Z keeps you on the wall. The game starts in "Hold to Stick" mode: after a pull you stay attached for as long as you hold Z, which gives you time to aim the next throw. In the options you can switch to the fast mode, where you only cling for a moment.

Restart instead of falling. S sends you back to the start of the room at once, which is quicker than waiting for a slow fall onto spikes. Every restart adds to the death counter, though, and the options can hide that counter if it bothers you.
