About the game
Hauberk is a roguelike in the traditional sense: the world is drawn with letters and symbols, you move one step at a time, and the dungeons are generated anew every time you go down. The hero is an "@", the monsters are letters, from small creatures to dragons, and the loot is a pile of coloured symbols that you learn to read at a glance. Despite the old-school look, it is a modern take on the genre, with a clean interface, readable colours and a lot of detail in how fights work.
You create a hero by choosing a race (human, elf, dwarf, gnome or fae) and a class (warrior, mage, barbarian, sorcerer or adventurer). The game begins in a town, where you can browse shops and prepare, and then you take the stairs down. Each dungeon has its own architecture, from caves to rooms and halls, and a different set of monsters that grow stronger with depth. Fighting and exploring earn experience, and you spend it on skills and abilities. Items and weapons turn up with all sorts of properties, so the loot you find shapes your build.
Like most of its kind, it is not gentle. If your hero dies, it is gone, and the next one starts over, which is what makes every careful step matter. Heroes are saved in your browser between visits.
Playing it here
Click Play. The game fills the frame and adapts to its size. A small bar at the bottom left lets you pick the size of the letters (6x8 up to 16x20); your choice is remembered. It needs a keyboard, saves heroes in this browser only (clearing the site data erases them) and makes no requests outside this site.

Tips
Start in town. Buy food and healing before the first descent; fighting hungry is a bad idea.
Read the help. Press H on any screen for the commands that apply to it.
Run away. Retreating to the stairs is a legitimate tactic, and dying loses the hero.
Spend your experience. Press Shift + E after a fight; abilities are what turn a hero from average into a specialist.
FAQ
Do I lose everything when I die? Yes, that hero is lost; you create another.
Can I use a mouse? Not to play; the game is keyboard-driven.
Does it work on a phone? No, it needs a keyboard.
Is the game finished? The author calls it a long-running project; it is playable and rich, but parts are still unfinished.
Credits and licence
Hauberk was made by Bob Nystrom (munificent), author of Crafting Interpreters, and is released under the MIT licence. It is written in Dart and compiled to JavaScript for the web, using the author's libraries malison and piecemeal (MIT), the web package and meta (BSD-3-Clause). The pixel fonts of the display are the author's; the Buenard font of the page (SIL Open Font License) is served from this site. We changed three small things: the page no longer loads fonts from other sites, hero saves use their own key, and the game starts in the 8x10 letter size. The licence texts, the source and the patch are linked from this page.
