About the game

Ybelle and Ludar wake up inside a strange castle, and the only way out is through it. Each room is a small puzzle: the magic objects are scattered around the room, and the exit only opens once you have picked up all of them. Then the exit comes to life, and you move under it and jump into it.

Getting to the objects is the hard part. You climb ladders, hang from bars, swing on ropes and jump across gaps, and some floors crumble after you step on them, so the order in which you cross a room matters. Creatures roam the later rooms, some bouncing around, some wandering at random and some chasing you, and touching one costs you the room. Every room also has a time limit, shown at the top left; the objects you still need are shown at the top right. If a creature gets you or the time runs out, the room starts over.

The story is told in short dialogs between the two characters before and between the rooms. There are 33 rooms in all.

Playing it here

This is Holotz's Castle 1.3.14, the latest version, compiled for the browser from the author's source package with the patches of the Debian package. The download is about 12 MB. Your options and saved games stay in this browser.

The game can be played in English or in one of twelve other languages, including Portuguese (Options, Language). The difficulty option sets the time you get for each room and how fast the creatures move, from Easy to Hard. Toy, the most relaxed, has no time limit and harmless creatures.

Saving. Leaving to the menu and choosing Continue game starts again at the beginning of the room you were in. The Save option keeps your progress in one of the slots, to pick it up later with Load. The author suggests saving right after entering a new room.

Tips

Plan the route first. Before moving, look at where every object is and which floors look cracked; a floor that breaks behind you can leave an object out of reach.

Use the jump height. A short tap is a hop and a long press a full jump, which you need to reach high ledges without overshooting.

Mind the clock. If the time feels too tight, choose an easier difficulty in the options; Medium is the default.

Watch the creatures. Learn how each one moves before you cross its path; the chasers follow you, so lure them away and double back.
