About the game

In the year 2078 a "Shadow Rider" has slipped out of the timeline, and you are the hunter sent to catch him before he tears at the fabric of spacetime. That is the whole briefing, delivered on a green-screen terminal that types itself out letter by letter, and then the city opens up in front of you.

Hunt for the Shadow Rider is a compact run-and-gun platformer. You run along neon-lit rooftops and building fronts, jump gaps, climb ladders and shoot the patrol drones and turrets that stand in your way. Three stages of rising difficulty lead to a boss fight, and you have a handful of hearts to get through all of it. The art is a love letter to pixel cyberpunk: purple dusk skies, glowing signs in Japanese, and a sprite sheet that moves nicely for a game made in a week.

It was written by one person for Open Jam 2019 and published as free software under the GPL, which is why you can also read the source of this exact build.

Playing it here

Click Play and wait for the page to load (about 22 MB, downloaded only when you press the button). On the title screen click Play (the first click can just focus the page, so click once more if nothing happens), read the briefing and press Enter to start. The game needs a keyboard and a sound-friendly tab; nothing is saved between visits.

Controls

Input Action
Left / Right arrows or A / D run
Up arrow or W jump; climb a ladder
Down arrow or S go down a ladder or drop
Z or comma fire
Esc pause
Q back to the title screen

Tips

Keep moving. Standing still in front of a drone or a turret is the quickest way to lose a heart. Fire as you run.

Hearts are few. Treat every hit as expensive; take a second to look at the next screen before you run into it.

Use ladders and ledges. Changing height is the easiest way to get out of a line of fire.

FAQ

Does the Q key or the X button close the game? In a browser there is nothing to close, so they take you back to the title screen.

Why are there different neon signs than in the original? Two signs of the original city mirrored brands, so this version replaces them with other neon signs from the same free art pack.

Is it free to share? Yes. The code is under the GPL 3, the art is public domain (CC0), the music is Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 and the fonts are open; everything is listed below.
