About the game
A small ship sits at the bottom of a field that scrolls downward between two pale blue walls, with grey blocks drifting down and yellow enemy tanks marching in from the top. The ship follows your pointer from side to side, and as long as you are not pressing anything it wears a spinning shield that swallows enemy bullets. Every bullet the shield absorbs raises your multiplier by one and scores a few points.
Press and hold and the ship stops following the pointer, drops the shield and fires a laser at the pointer, once every few moments. The beam bounces off the side walls and off the blocks, so you can bank it round corners. The catch is that the enemies have a shield of their own. A tank is protected while it is up in the top of the field and waiting to shoot, and the laser is wasted on it. It drops the shield when it fires a burst of shots, or once it has come far enough down the field, and that is the moment a laser kills it, for ten times your multiplier.
So you are always choosing between guarding and attacking: shooting means giving up your own shield, and the enemy's burst is flying at you at the same instant. If a tank reaches the bottom of the screen, or a bullet hits you while the shield is down, the game is over.
Hyper Laser is one of the mini-games that Kenta Cho, who works as ABA Games, makes with his crisp-game-lib library. There are no image or sound files: the graphics are drawn by the code, and the sound effects and music are generated while you play.
Playing it here
Click Play, then click or tap inside the game to start. The ship is steered with the mouse or finger, so keyboard-only play does not work well. Nothing is installed or sent anywhere. The best score at the top right is only remembered while the page stays open.
Controls
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| Move the mouse / drag a finger | slide the ship sideways; the red cross is where the laser will go |
| Press and hold | drop the shield and fire the laser |
A few things worth knowing
Let the shield do the work. Bullets you absorb raise the multiplier, and the multiplier is what makes each kill worth something.
Shoot when the enemy shoots. A tank only drops its shield while it fires, so wait for its burst, then answer it.
Use the bounce. The laser reflects off blocks and walls, which lets you hit tanks that are behind cover.
