About the game
In the Hollows is a compact platformer about a rescue. At the start a small green creature, Mr Green, tells you that your orange friend wandered into the hollows and never came back. You set off after him through twelve cave screens, each one left by running off its left or right edge, and now and then you catch sight of Mr Orange strolling away ahead of you.
The caves are full of things that end a run: spikes on the floor, walls and ceilings, pools of contaminated water, snails crawling back and forth and mushrooms that release a deadly cloud of spores if you linger on them. Some screens are locked behind a door that only opens once you grab the key, and others have blocks that blink in and out of existence every second.
Two counters keep the pressure on. You start with 25 health and every death costs one, sending you back to the start of the screen; a few rare pick-ups give one back. And a single five-minute clock runs for the whole game. Reach your friend before either runs out and the game shows how many times you died and how long it took.
Playing it here
In the Hollows was made for TIC-80, a fantasy console: an imaginary 1980s-style computer with a 240 by 136 screen and 16 colours, for which independent developers write new games. It runs here in the official TIC-80 web player. Click Play and the first cave starts straight away, with the clock already running.
The game is meant to be played in one sitting and does not save. Esc opens the TIC-80 menu, which can also restart the game. A gamepad works directly, and on touch screens an on-screen D-pad and buttons appear.

A few things worth knowing
Diamonds give you a second jump. The diamond-shaped items floating in the air recharge your jump: touch one while falling and you can jump again in mid-air. Some gaps can only be crossed by chaining them.
Don't stand on mushrooms. Touching a mushroom is safe for about a second, then its cloud of spores turns deadly. Hop across them instead of waiting.
Mind the side walls on the way down. Spikes stuck to the side of a shaft only hurt when you move into them, so when you drop down a narrow hole, hold the arrow away from the spiky wall.
