About the game
Its full title says it all: I Want to Help Fight the Demon Overlord, but I'm Just an Intern! A party of adventurers is on its way to save the world, and you would very much like to come along. They have other plans for you. Interns do not fight monsters, they say; interns go back west to town and fetch more potions.
So off you go. Intern Apocalypse is a compact action adventure seen from above, in low-poly 3D: a winding path through rocky country, a town with a few people in it, and monsters along the way that are not impressed by your job title. You have a sword, a health bar and a list of errands that keeps getting longer, because the person who sells potions is never quite where you expect.
Dietrich Epp wrote it for js13kGames 2019, a competition where the complete game has to fit in a 13-kilobyte zip file. Everything you see and hear is generated when the page loads: the landscape, the models and the two music tracks, which he composed himself and which the game synthesises note by note from a tiny score. The theme that year was "Back", as in going back to town.
Playing it here
This is the original competition build, unchanged (the same file as the author's v1.0 release). Click Play and give it about ten seconds: the loading screen stays up while the soundtrack is generated. Then click New Game.
The game runs in a fixed-size window and needs WebGL. There is no save, and there is no proper ending screen either: the author explains that "The End" had to be cut to fit the size limit, so once your errands are done you have simply run out of things to do.

A few things worth knowing
Talk to everyone. People tell you where to go next, and the path is not always the obvious one. Stand next to someone and press Space.
Fight at arm's length. Monsters hit hard. Swing as they come in, then step back, rather than standing still and trading blows.
Keep an eye on the health bar. It sits at the top of the screen.
The world is small. If you feel lost, head back to the last person you spoke to and listen again.
