About the game

Into The GarlicScape is a miniature roguelike. You play a woolly little adventurer who heads down into a dungeon to gather garlic. Every move you make is one turn, and after each step the creatures around you take theirs.

The first rooms are fixed, but after that every flight of stairs leads to a new, randomly built floor with garlic, monsters and sometimes a friendly llama. Collect fifteen bulbs and the next stairs take you to the chamber of the chalice, where picking up one more bulb wins the game. You have three hearts: moths flutter about at random, roaches crawl along the walls, and either one hurts you if it moves onto your square. Bumping into a llama gives it a hug and restores all your hearts.

John Earnest wrote it as an example program for Octojam 7, to show how a small turn-based game can be put together, and it is a complete game in its own right.

Playing it here

This is a CHIP-8 program. CHIP-8 is a small virtual machine from 1977, created for hobby computers like the COSMAC VIP, and people still write new games for it today. Into The GarlicScape targets XO-CHIP, a modern extension that adds colour, more memory and better sound. It runs here in the Octo emulator.

Click Play, then walk right along the corridor on the title screen and step onto the stairs to begin. F2 saves the state of the emulator at any moment and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too: the D-pad moves and A dismisses screens.

Controls

Key Action
W A S D or arrow keys move one square (each step is a turn); walk into stairs, garlic, moths and llamas to use them
E or Space continue after the game over or victory screen
F2 / F4 save / load the state

A few things worth knowing

Moths are fragile. Walking into a moth squashes it, so you can clear one out of your way. Roaches can't be squashed: they keep to the wall on their right, which makes their route predictable enough to step around.

Save llamas for later. A llama refills all three hearts, but only up to three. If you are already healthy, leave it and come back after a scrape.

Two test keys were left in. Key 1 takes away a heart and key 2 adds a point to your garlic count. They were debugging aids, so avoid 1 unless you like a challenge.
