About the game
The theme of Ludum Dare 44 was "Your life is currency", and Jumpcoins takes it literally. You are a small round character in a gridded world of grey blocks, and your jumping power comes from the coins you carry. A normal jump is free. The special ones are not: when you press jump again in the air for a double jump, or kick off a wall for a wall jump, a coin is spent. So the more coins you gather along the way, the more tricks you can do, and the fewer you have, the more carefully you have to move.
There are 20 levels in the game, with spikes, enemies and gaps, and the challenge is to string together a route with the coins that the level gives you. Each level also hides badges, small goals such as finishing without dying or without taking damage, and there is a timer so you can come back to beat your best time.
This is the "Deluxe" version, the author's improved version made after the compo, with better keyboard and gamepad controls and a few fixes (a more reliable wall jump and no accidental frame-perfect double jumps). The author says he made the entry from scratch, in 48 hours, alone.
Playing it here
The game runs in the page and works with a keyboard or a gamepad (the author even recommends one). Click on it first so that the page has the focus. It saves nothing from one visit to the next. The download is about 9 MB, mostly the music. Sound starts after your first click.
The first level teaches the basics with on-screen hints, such as "Press [Z] to jump!".
Controls
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| Arrow keys or W A S D | move |
| Z or Space | jump (again in the air: double jump, costs a coin) |
| Against a wall, then jump | wall jump (costs a coin) |
| Gamepad | stick or D-pad to move, any face button to jump |
Tips
Count your coins. Look at how many you have before you commit to a double jump.
Wall jumps save levels. A wall jump can fix a mistake, so check whether there is a wall nearby when you are about to fall.
Replay for the badges. The badges push you to play a level in another way, and a second run is usually faster.
Credits and licence
Jumpcoins was made by Shawn M. Moore (sartak) for Ludum Dare 44 and released under the MIT licence. The game runs on Phaser 3 (MIT), and the licences of that and of the other open-source packages in the build are linked from this page, together with the source and the build script. In this version the Google Analytics code and the box with links to the author's sites were removed from the page, and the page has a policy that blocks requests outside the site.
