About the game
Karakuri is Japanese for a clever mechanism: a trick, a puzzle box, a wind-up toy. This page is a box of eight such small puzzles, each with five levels that step up in difficulty. In Save the Character you draw a single line to shield a smiling face from falling danger and keep it safe for three seconds. In Pin Rescue you pull the pins in the right order so that the hero stays away from the lava and the hero or the gold reaches the safe place. In Nuts and Bolts you move screws to free slots so that the plates they held fall away, in Stretch Grabber you drag a stretchy arm round pegs and walls to grab a star, in Grid Escape you slide blocks along their lanes so that the key block can leave, in Rope Cut you swipe across ropes to bring a load to its target without letting it fall into the pit, in Tube Sort you pour colours between tubes until each tube holds one colour, and in Choice Story you pick the right tool at each of three stages.
The physics gives the same result in every browser, so a solution that works once works every time. The levels you win, and the game and level you were on, are remembered on your device.
Playing it here
Click Play and pick one of the eight games from the row, then a level from 1 to 5. A line under the row says what the game asks for. Use the mouse or a finger on the board: draw with a drag, pull a pin by dragging it out, swipe across a rope to cut it, tap a screw or a tube to move it. If the game is lost, "Try again" restarts the level; the arrow buttons next to Restart move between levels. To use the keyboard, give the board focus: the arrow keys move the cursor, Shift moves one unit at a time, Enter or Space starts and ends a drag, Escape cancels it and Home centres the cursor. The "Your progress" section at the bottom keeps the levels you have won.

A few things worth knowing
Look before you pull. In Pin Rescue the order of the pins decides what falls on whom.
Ink is limited. In Save the Character a short, well-placed line beats a long one.
Start from level 1. The early levels teach the trick each game is built on.
Questions
Are the puzzles random? No. Each level is fixed, so you can think it through and try again.
Does it work on a phone? Yes. Everything can be done with touch.
