About the game

Lander 2 is a careful flying game. Your rocket drifts over a rugged landscape, gravity keeps pulling it down, and the goal on every level is to touch down gently on a landing pad: the flat strips marked with red dots. Land too fast, hit the rocks or burn all your fuel, and the rocket is lost.

The thrusters work the way a real rocket does: pressing a direction fires the engine on that side, so the rocket accelerates the other way. Down slows your fall, and Left and Right correct your drift. Every burst of thrust uses fuel, so the best landings are the ones with the fewest corrections.

It was made for the SMS Power! coding competition in 2015, as the sequel to the author's 2013 entry.

Playing it here

This is a homebrew game made for the Master System: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. It runs here in Gearsystem, a Master System emulator compiled to WebAssembly. Click Play now and press Z to start and to move past the text screens.

F2 saves the full state of the emulator in this browser and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too.

Controls

Key Master System button Action
Down D-pad fire the main engine (slows your fall)
Left / Right D-pad fire the side engines (the rocket moves the other way)
Z Button 1 start; skip text
X Button 2 after a crash, restart from the first level
F2 / F4 — save / load the emulator state

A few things worth knowing

Think in reverse. Acceleration goes against the arrow you press. It takes a few tries to stop fighting it.

Short taps beat long burns. Small corrections save fuel and keep your speed low for the touchdown.

Aim for the dots. Only the flat pads marked with red dots count as a landing.
