About the game

Lane is played on an endless table with nothing on it at first but two orange score cards side by side. Each player has a hand of cards, and on your turn you place one at a spot on the board and push in a direction: whatever is in the way gets shoved along the line, like crates in a pushing puzzle. Cards that are touching a score card count for their owner, and the first player to reach four points wins.

There are seven kinds of card. Normal cards push one neighbour, doubles push more, blocks refuse to move, ghosts slide through, redirects bend a push and reverses turn it around. A card that leaves play comes back to your hand a turn later. You can also use your turn to push a card already on the board, or pick one of yours back up.

When the game opens you choose who you play: the computer on Trivial, Medium, Hard or Impossible, a computer-versus-computer match to watch (Watch, and Witness The Impossible), or Pass the Console for two people sharing the keyboard.

Playing it here

This is a homebrew game made for the Game Boy Advance: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. It runs here in mGBA, a Game Boy Advance emulator compiled to WebAssembly. Click Play now and choose an opponent with the arrow keys and X. The game is 11 MB because it carries a full track of music. F2 saves the emulator state in this browser and F4 brings it back.

A few things worth knowing

Think in lines. A push moves a whole row of cards, so look at what is behind the first card before you shove.

Your own cards count only next to a score card. Pushing the score cards around is as important as placing yours.

Use the easy level to learn the cards. Trivial is a good way to see what each kind of card does.

Credits and licence

Lane is by Corwin Kuiper, made for the GBA Jam 2022 with the agb library for Rust. Code and card art are his and the code is under the Mozilla Public License 2.0. The music, "Mist City", is by Section7 (CC BY 4.0, from OpenGameArt). The author does not publish a ready-made ROM, so the one served here was compiled from the project source code, with the original font (no licence on record) replaced by the open Share Tech Mono (SIL OFL). Because the licence is a copyleft one, the full source code is hosted next to the game. The licence text is linked from this page.
