About the game
Linjat is a pencil-puzzle on a grid. Some squares hold a number in a yellow disc, and some hold only a dot. Every number has to grow a straight line that is exactly as long as the number says, counting the number's own square, and every dot has to end up under some line. The lines may not cross each other. That is all the rules there are, and all of the puzzles can be solved by pure reasoning, with no trial and error: if you are guessing, you have missed a deduction.
The game comes with a short tutorial of four boards, and then four difficulties, Easy, Medium, Hard and Expert, each with a hundred puzzles that were generated in advance. It remembers how far you got in each difficulty, so you can stop and come back.
Juho Snellman designed and wrote Linjat in 2019 as a side effect of experimenting with generating puzzles by program. It is plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript with jQuery, and the cartoon lettering is the Coiny font.
Playing it here
Click Play and start with the Tutorial. Press on a number and drag along a row or a column; the line grows to follow the pointer, up to the length of the number. The number does not have to be at the end of its line: a line can extend to both sides, by dragging once one way and once the other, and drawing again from the same number replaces what you drew. When you think the board is solved, press Done: if it is right, you move on to the next puzzle. Reset clears the board and Back returns to the menu. It works with a mouse and with touch.
Controls
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| press on a number and drag along a row or column | draw (or redraw) the line that runs through that number |
| Reset | clear the board and start the puzzle again |
| Done | check the solution and go to the next puzzle |
| Back | return to the menu |
A few things worth knowing
Start with the biggest numbers. A long line has only a few places to go on a small grid, and often one of its squares is decided by the board edge or by a neighbour. Fix what is certain first, then see what the lines you drew rule out.
Dots are clues. A dot that can be reached by only one number must be covered by it. Follow the dots from the edges inwards.
Never guess. Every puzzle has a path of logical steps. If you reach a point with two equal options, go back and look for a number or a dot you have not used.
Credits and licence
Linjat was designed and written by Juho Snellman and is released under the MIT licence. It uses jQuery 3.3.1 (MIT) and the Coiny font (Marcelo Magalhães, SIL Open Font License 1.1). The changes made for this site are the removal of the share-card tags and of the links to other sites (now plain text), a fix to the font path so that the game can run from a folder, and a rule that blocks any request to other sites; the patch, the build script and the licence texts are linked from this page.
