About the game
Low Battery 2 is the sequel to Low Battery, made for Ludum Dare 30, whose theme was "Connected Worlds". You play a small figure who must reach the glowing goal of every level before a countdown, in a round timer at the top right, runs out. The way there is a castle of brick walls and torches, full of gaps that you cannot jump across, so you carry a grappling hook: hold the left mouse button and the hook flies toward the pointer and catches on anything solid. Then you swing, let go and use your speed to carry you further.
The twist is the three worlds. The obstacles in the level come in three families: green vines, blue ice crystals and red flames, and at any time only one family is solid while the other two are harmless. The keys 1, 2 and 3 switch which world you are in. The hook only catches what is solid, so you swap worlds in mid-swing to let go of one wall and catch another, to pass through a barrier that you could not cross a second earlier, or to avoid spikes at the last moment.
Technically it is more than it looks. The author says the game began as a test of drawing tile maps with WebGL and a kind of deferred lighting, and that this took most of the weekend, which explains the soft pools of light around the torches and the shine on the bricks.
Playing it here
Click Play, then click the instruction card in the game to begin ("Wicked sick! I'm ready to start!!!"). Hold the left mouse button to throw and keep the hook, release to let go, and use 1, 2 and 3 to change worlds. The author warns that it is meant to be hard. Nothing is installed or sent anywhere. The practice mode that the original page links is not part of this copy.
Controls
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| Left mouse button, hold | throw the hook toward the pointer and hold on |
| Release | let go of the hook |
| 1, 2, 3 | switch to the green, blue or red world |
A few things worth knowing
Switch while swinging. The hook only holds on to solid things, so changing worlds is also a way of letting go on purpose.
Read the colours. Vines, ice and flames each belong to one world; the tools to beat a level are always on the screen.
Use your momentum. A long swing carries you much farther than a short hop, and the clock only matters if you hesitate.
