About the game

Low Battery was written for Ludum Dare 27, a 48-hour game contest whose theme was "10 seconds". The cave is dark and you only have ten seconds of battery, which is shown as a big round timer that fills with green, then orange, then red as it empties. Every level is a small cave with a few chests, some skeletons walking about and, at the end, a red gem that you can only take once all the chests have been opened.

You run, jump and slide down walls and jump off them again, and you carry a launcher that shoots rockets, with which you blast the skeletons out of the way. Each level starts with a fresh ten seconds, so the game is a race between getting to the gem and the light going out, and the seconds you still have when you reach it are added to your score. The counters at the bottom of the screen show how many chests you have opened out of the total and your score.

The game has a lightweight collision system that its author is proud of. The particles that come out of explosions and rockets collide with the cave and with the enemies too, which makes the blasts feel solid. The author calls it one of his first Ludum Dare entries and one that is still pretty fun to play through.

A few things worth knowing

Go for the chests first. The gem does nothing until every chest is open, so plan a route that ends at the gem.

Rockets are for clearing a path. Skeletons walk back and forth along their ledge, so wait for the right moment and fire.

Use the walls. You can jump off them as well as from the floor, which is how you climb the tall shafts.
