About the game

You are Pearl, a small cat in a spacesuit, and you live on a tiny moon that has just been invaded by well-meaning guests. Two visitors, the painter Speckle and the carpenter Marble, have come to shut the moon's only door, because flocks of angels keep pouring out of a ship in orbit, and the angels are not friendly to anything they touch. You do not want the door shut, so you make a deal: you will hold the angels off while Speckle works on a mural that will keep them away for good, and in return you get a Cosmic Catnip Carrot.

Each of the five waves is a short defence. Angels float in from the sky and head for the door and for the mural, and you run along the curve of the moon, jump, throw fish at them to stun them and paint to finish them off. Speckle's progress bar at the bottom of the screen fills while she paints and stops (it turns black) when an angel is bothering her. Every angel you finish drops Space Cash that flies to you when you are near, and between waves you can spend it at Anise's shop on a longer reach and a faster throw. If the door falls, you start the wave again.

Lunar Depot 38 was made in 48 hours for Ludum Dare 38 by Eevee, who wrote the code, with glitchedpuppet, who drew, wrote and scored everything else. It is a strange, funny and pretty game, and it is short.

Playing it here

Click Play. The game opens with a long cut-scene and a title card; press E or Space to move through the dialogue. There is no save, and a new visit always starts from the beginning, but there are only five waves.

The game was written for an older version of the LÖVE framework, so we adapted it to the current one, and it runs in the browser compiled to WebAssembly. The patch that does this is published with the game's source code.

Controls

Key Action

D throw paint

A few things worth knowing

Talk to Marble to start each wave. Nothing happens until you tell her you are ready, and between waves she fixes the door, so you can take your time.

Fish stun, paint finishes. Paint only hurts an angel that a fish has just stunned, so throw a fish first and then the paint. Both have a short cooldown, so do not spam them.

Spend the Space Cash. Anise's shop sells upgrades such as a longer throwing range and a faster rate of fire for a few Space Cash each, and they make the later waves much easier.
