About the game

In Masquer8 you play Cammy, a cuttlefish who hides by changing the pattern on her skin. Each level shows a background texture, and your job is to build the same texture on Cammy by switching layers of stripes on and off. Layers stack on top of each other, and pressing a key again takes its layer away.

Every change you make counts. A small counter in the bottom right corner ticks down with each key press, and when it runs out, or when you press V, the shark takes a look. If Cammy does not match perfectly, both horizontally and vertically, the shark moves closer; the shark icon in the corner shows how close it is, and once you can see its eyes it is nearly on top of you.

There are ten levels. You start with vertical stripes, horizontal stripes join after a couple of levels, and later a set of mixed patterns arrives, which is where the game gets truly hard. After the ending an endless mode serves random puzzles, and in it the shark leaves you alone.

Playing it here

This is a CHIP-8 program. CHIP-8 is a small virtual machine from 1977, created for hobby computers such as the COSMAC VIP, and people still write new games for it today. Masquer8 targets the original CHIP-8 and was made for Octojam 2, a CHIP-8 game jam held in October 2015. It runs here in the Octo emulator. Click Play, wait for the short loading bar (the game builds Cammy's patterns when it starts) and press any key.

F2 saves the state of the emulator at any moment and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too, although this game uses most of the keyboard.

Controls

Key Action
1 2 3 4 toggle the four vertical stripe layers
Q W E R toggle the horizontal stripe layers (unlocked after a few levels)
A S D F, Z X C toggle the pattern layers (unlocked later)
V try to blend in now
V on the title screen continue from the last level you reached
Z on the title screen go straight to the endless mode
F2 / F4 save / load the state

A few things worth knowing

Learn the indicator. The HUD shows which layers are switched on. Toggling a few keys and watching it change is the quickest way to understand how the patterns combine, and how to get back to a plain Cammy.

Do not guess with V. A wrong attempt costs a lot of time and brings the shark closer, so check the alignment first. In pattern mode, remember that each puzzle is made of only two or three layers: find one that must be there, then try adding the others.

Stuck in the endless mode? Pressing V ten times in a row ends the round, and from the title screen you get a fresh puzzle. Continue with V only remembers your level while the page stays open, so use F2 if you want to keep your place.
