About the game

A factory employee has lost their keys. Find them and get back inside the building before the shift ends. That is the whole assignment, and it goes sideways in the best way. You play as a goat in a world of sand-coloured cliffs, rusting machinery and strange neighbours: a cat who fishes for compliments, a traffic cat who works hard every day, a branch commander on his way home, and many more, all drawn in the soft colours of the Floraverse, the universe of the artist glitchedpuppet.

Neon Phase is an exploration platformer with a bit of gentle puzzling. You walk and jump across a big connected map, talk to everyone you meet, collect small things and upgrades, and use the objects you find. Early on you meet Chip, a chatty little upgrade chip that rides with you, and its upgrades add new abilities: it can fire an energy ball that recharges devices and breaks cracked orange blocks, and it can pick up and carry things. Some places of the map are strange, glitchy worlds of their own.

The game was made in about nine days by Eevee, who wrote the code, together with glitchedpuppet, who drew the art and wrote the music, for the Games Made Quick game jam. It takes a bit over half an hour to play straight through. The dialogue is funny and warm.

Playing it here

Neon Phase was written for the LÖVE framework, and it runs in the browser compiled to WebAssembly. Click Play and wait a few seconds while the game loads; press any key on the title screen, and read through the introduction (Space or E advances the text). There is no save, so a visit always starts from the beginning, but the game is short.

The picture is rendered at a low resolution and scaled up, and the window follows the size of the frame. A gamepad works as well: A jumps, X uses, and the left shoulder button picks up Chip.

Controls

Key Action
Left, Right walk
Space jump; advance the dialogue (E also advances it)
E use a machine, a door or an item; talk
Up, Down choose an answer in a dialogue
S hold to pick up and carry Chip (after the upgrade)
D fire the energy ball (after the upgrade)

A few things worth knowing

Talk to everyone. The characters are the best part of the game, and some of them give you a hint about where to go next.

Look for the cracked orange blocks. Chip's energy ball breaks them, and they usually hide a shortcut or something worth taking.

Jump a bit longer to jump higher. Releasing the key early cuts the jump short, so you can control how far you go.

Credits and licence

Neon Phase was made by Eevee (code) and glitchedpuppet (art, sounds, music and the Floraverse world), for the Games Made Quick jam in 2017. The soundtrack is sold separately on the game's itch.io page. The code is under the ISC licence and the art, sounds and music are under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0; the font is m5x7 by Daniel Linssen (CC0), and the game uses the libraries anim8, dkjson, flux, tick and HUMP, all MIT. The version served here differs from the original only in two small changes needed to run in the browser (the game controller database was left out, and one visual effect was rewritten so that it runs on WebGL); the complete source code and the patch are hosted alongside the game, and the licence texts are linked from this page.
