About the game

NOBORUNOCA is a climbing game played with a single key. A small green creature paces from wall to wall on its own, turning around whenever it bumps into the side of the shaft. Above it, floors full of gaps keep coming down, and if the creature drops off the bottom of the screen the game is over.

The only thing you control is the jump. Holding Space fills a power gauge that rises and falls on its own, and letting go launches the creature with whatever power the gauge showed at that moment. Too little and it falls short, too much and it sails past the floor you wanted. Every 30 floors the level goes up, the gaps get more frequent and, from level 10, the whole game speeds up.

The game first came out in 2022; the version here is the 1.0.2 release from 2025, rebuilt with a newer toolchain.

Playing it here

This is a homebrew game made for the MSX, the home computer standard of the 1980s that was also popular in Brazil through machines like the Gradiente Expert and the Sharp Hotbit. It is a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release, written for the original MSX (MSX1). It runs here in the blueMSX emulator with C-BIOS, a free replacement for the MSX system software. Click Play now and press Space when the title appears.

F2 saves the full state of the emulator in this browser and F4 brings it back. The game only reads the Space bar, so on a gamepad use the Start button, which acts as Space.

Controls

Key Action
Space (hold) fill the power gauge
Space (release) jump with the power shown
Space start the game; back to the title after a game over
F2 / F4 save / load the emulator state

A few things worth knowing

Press early when you land. If you tap Space while the creature is still in the air and it lands a moment later, it bounces straight into another jump. These timed jumps are worth more points than ordinary ones.

Watch the REMAIN counter. It shows how many floors are left before the next level. Reaching it brings a solid floor with no gaps, a level-up jingle and a 30-point bonus.

The title screen picks the layout. The random floors are seeded from the power gauge at the moment you press Space on the title screen, so the same timing gives the same shaft.
