About the game
Octoma is a small role-playing adventure seen from above, in the spirit of the computer fantasy games of the early 1980s. You start out in a small kingdom of paths, bridges and seaweed with 100 hit points and a strength of 1, and your goal is to rescue the princess held in Castle Daiouika.
The game is turn-based: each time you move, wait or attack, every monster in the area takes a step towards you, and any that reach you attack. Shrimps and lobsters roam the overworld, lobsters also guard Temple 8, the Lost Caves are home to water bears and to skulls that float straight through walls, and the castle is full of squids. A treasure chest in Temple 8 holds a sacred sword that raises your strength to 7, and the Lost Caves hide armour that adds 100 hit points and softens every blow. Deep in the castle, the wizard guards the key to the princess's door. The final screen changes depending on which of the two treasures you found.
Playing it here
This is a CHIP-8 program. CHIP-8 is a small virtual machine from 1977, created for hobby computers like the COSMAC VIP, and people still write new games for it today. Octoma targets XO-CHIP, a modern extension that adds colour, more memory and sound, and was made for Octojam 8, a yearly CHIP-8 game jam. It runs here in the Octo emulator, at the very high speed the author recommends.
Click Play and press Space to start. F2 saves the state of the emulator at any moment and F4 brings it back. A gamepad can move (D-pad) and wait (B), but attacking needs the keyboard key 1.
Controls
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| W A S D or arrow keys | move one square; step onto doors and chests to use them |
| Q | wait a turn without moving |
| 1, then W A S D | attack the square in that direction |
| 3 | cancel an attack before choosing the direction |
| E or Space | start the game |
| F2 / F4 | save / load the state |
A few things worth knowing
Get the treasures first. At strength 1 the castle's squids and the wizard take a very long time to fall, and they hit hard. Visit the temple and the caves before heading to the castle.
Let monsters come to you. Since enemies move after you, waiting with Q next to a corridor and attacking as they arrive often costs less health than walking into them.
Save before a big fight. When your hit points run out, the game stops on a screen asking you to reset. Press F2 before entering a dungeon, so F4 can put you back there instead of starting over.
