About the game
One Slime Army is an arcade survival game in a single arena. You are a small slime armed with a sword and a shield, and the enemies keep coming in waves: spiders that scuttle straight at you, cannons that sit still and fire shots across the room, and, every tenth wave, a giant segmented snake that winds its way around the screen and grows longer each time it returns. Clear a wave and the next one starts at once, a little bigger than the last.
There is no health bar. One touch from an enemy or one shot that gets through ends the run, so the whole game is about timing. The shield stops shots from the front and bounces them back the way they came, where they can take out the enemies that fired them; it also shoves spiders away. The sword covers a short arc in front of you, and a quick dash carries you out of trouble; while you dash, nothing can hurt you.
When the run ends, the game shows the wave you reached, your kills and how long you lasted. Your best kill count is kept as the high score.
Playing it here
One Slime Army was made for WASM-4, a fantasy console: an imaginary handheld with a 160 by 160 screen, four colours, a D-pad and two buttons, for which independent developers write new games. It was written in Zig for the second WASM-4 game jam, in 2022, and runs here in the official WASM-4 runtime. Click Play and press X or Z on the title screen.
The high score and the volume setting are saved on the game's WASM-4 disk, which stays in this browser. Enter opens the WASM-4 menu, where you can also save and load the state of the game while the page is open (2 and 4 do the same directly). A gamepad works too, and on touch screens an on-screen D-pad and buttons appear.
Controls
| Key | WASM-4 button | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Arrow keys | D-pad | move |
| Z (hold) | button 2 | raise the shield; you keep facing the same way |
| Z (release) | button 2 | swing the sword |
| X | button 1 | dash |
| Left / Right (title) | D-pad | volume |
| X or Z (title, game over) | buttons 1 and 2 | start; back to the title |
| Enter | — | WASM-4 menu |
Space or V also works as X, and C as Z.
A few things worth knowing
The shield is also a weapon. A shot blocked from the front flies back and destroys whatever it hits, cannons included. Holding Z keeps you facing the same way, so you can back away from a cannon and still block its fire.
Dash through, not away. The dash makes you untouchable for a moment, so it can carry you straight through a spider or a snake's body when you are boxed in.
Expect a snake every ten waves. Waves 10, 20, 30 and so on bring the snake, which takes up more of the arena every time. Stay near the open space and cut it down segment by segment.
Credits and licence
One Slime Army was created by Isaiah Billingsley, who wrote it in Zig and drew everything, including the sound effects, directly in code. It is released under the ISC licence, published with the source code in his repository on GitHub. It runs here in the WASM-4 runtime (ISC licence). The licence text is linked from this page.
