About the game

ONOFF is a precision platformer drawn in nothing but white and dark grey. Each level is a single screen with a small boxy character on one side and a star on the other, and between them a set of platforms, gaps and spikes. The twist is that every level exists in two layers at once. Only one of them is solid at any moment; the other is drawn faintly, as a hint of what is there. Press Space and the world flips: the colours invert, the ghostly platforms become solid and the solid ones fade away.

The early levels teach the idea gently, with a gap you can only cross after switching layers. Before long you are flipping in the middle of a jump to land on a platform that did not exist a moment ago, or to make a row of spikes disappear just before you touch them. A counter in the corner keeps track of how many times you have died, and the game does not mind if that number grows large: you restart the level instantly.

Daniel Marino designed the game, its pixel typeface and its music, and Brad Dunbar wrote most of the code, for js13kGames 2018, whose theme was "Offline". The levels are built from SVG, so the game stays sharp at any size, and everything fits in 13 kilobytes.

Playing it here

This is the original competition version, unchanged. Click Play, then press Enter on START GAME. CONTROLS shows the keys and EDITOR opens the level editor. Progress is not saved between visits, so each session starts from the first level.

The editor

The editor lets you drag platforms around, resize them, double-click to move a platform to the other layer and add spikes. Press H inside the editor for the full list of keys, G to play the level you built and Esc to go back to the title screen.

A few things worth knowing

Flip in the air. The layer only matters at the moment you touch it, so many jumps are meant to start on one layer and end on the other.

Look at the faint shapes. Before moving, check where the inactive platforms and spikes are: that is the level you will be standing in after the next flip.

Do not fear the death counter. Restarts are instant, and most levels are solved by trying a few timings until one works.
