About the game
PepperTown is an idle game with an RPG coat of paint. A village is overrun by slimes, and four heroes from the webcomic Pepper&Carrot (Pepper, Coriander, Saffron and Shichimi) walk out to fight them. You do not move them: they pick their targets and fight by themselves. Your job is to be the shopkeeper behind them. Every slime that falls drops coins, and you spend the coins at the four buildings along the left edge of the map, the magic shop, the armor shop, the item shop and the weapon shop, to make your heroes hit harder, last longer and earn more.
The counter at the top shows your cash and how many slimes are left. The game ends when the last slime is gone, and the more you invest early, the faster the wave melts. It is a short game, easy to leave running while you look at something else.
PepperTown was made by Cong Xu with the Phaser engine. The characters come from Pepper&Carrot by David Revoy and the rest of the art and the sound effects are free assets credited below. This version runs without the music of the original, which is under a non-commercial licence; it keeps the sound effects.
Playing it here
Click Play, then click or tap the screen at the title (or press X) to start. Click the shop buildings, marked with a pointing hand, to open their windows, and click an item to buy it if you have the cash. Close a window by clicking outside it. Watch the heroes' health bars: a hero with no health left retreats to rest and comes back later, so armor and items are as important as weapons.
Controls
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| click or tap on the title screen, or X | start the game |
| click on a shop building (the pointing hand) | open the shop |
| click on an item in a shop | buy it |
Tips
Buy early. Coins come in faster with better equipment, so the first purchases pay for themselves.
Do not neglect defence. A hero with health left keeps killing, and one that has to retreat stops earning for you.
Look at the counter. The number of slimes left tells you if you are winning the wave before the heroes' health bars do.
FAQ
Does it have music? No. The original music is under a non-commercial licence, so it was left out. The sound effects are there.
Is it the real Pepper&Carrot? It is a fan game that uses the comic's characters with the permission its licence gives; the comic is by David Revoy.
Where is my progress? The game has no saves: each run starts from the beginning.
Credits and licence
PepperTown was written by Cong Xu and is released under the MIT licence. The characters and the winning picture are from Pepper&Carrot by David Revoy, CC BY 4.0. The art is also from OpenGameArt: 24x32 Pepper&Carrot Characters (Cong Xu) and Slime monster 24x24 (Bonsaiheldin) under CC BY 4.0, the Cabbit Collection (Svetlana Kushnariova, diamonddmgirl, Jordan Irwin) and Tiny 16: Basic (Sharm) under OGA-BY 3.0, Roguelike/RPG Items (Joe Williamson) and Golden UI (Buch) under CC BY-SA 3.0, and a coin animation (patvanmackelberg) under CC0. The sound effects are JRPG Style UI Sounds (KillaMaaki), Cash Register (kiddpark) and Picked Coin Echo (Nenad Simic) under CC BY 3.0, and 100 CC0 SFX #2 (rubberduck) under CC0. The font is Three Little Bitmap Fonts by Buch (CC0). The game was built from the author's source; the changes made for this site are the removal of the music and of the artwork that had no verifiable licence (the shop portraits, the title picture and two hit effects), a rule that blocks any request to other sites and a build setup that works with the author's lock file. The source, the patch, the build script and the licence texts are linked from this page.
