About the game

A wide, low screen with a hub in the middle: a small centre piece with an arm on each side, and a row of coloured blocks growing along each arm. At the top there is a pattern, a hub with its own two arms of coloured blocks, and that is what you have to build. Photons in different colours fly in from the left and from the right. When one reaches the end of the arm on its side, it sticks to it, and the arm grows by one block of that colour. One special kind of photon does the opposite and takes the last block off the arm.

Tapping spins the hub half a turn, which swaps its two arms, and holding the button keeps it turning. A photon that hits the hub while it is spinning is thrown back, which is how you refuse the colours you do not want. When the two arms match the pattern at the top (either way round), the step is cleared and a new, slightly harder pattern appears; each "world" adds more colours and longer arms. All the while two walls creep in from the sides of the screen, and if they meet, the game is over.

Photon Line is one of the one-button mini-games that Kenta Cho, who works as ABA Games, makes with his crisp-game-lib library. There are no image or sound files: the graphics are drawn by the code, and the sound effects and music are generated while you play.

Playing it here

Click Play, then click, tap or press Space inside the game to start. The game is drawn wide, so on a phone it is best played with the device turned sideways. Nothing is installed or sent anywhere. The best score at the top right is only remembered while the page stays open.

Controls

Input Action
Tap (click, touch or Space) spin the hub half a turn
Hold keep the hub spinning

A few things worth knowing

Read the pattern first. Work out which colours each arm needs, and in which order, before the photons arrive.

Refuse by spinning. A photon that hits the hub while it turns bounces away, so a tap throws back a wrong colour.

Use the special photon. If you pick up a wrong block, the special photon takes the last one off again.
