About the game
Pixel Quest puts you in the robes of Moashiin, a grey mage, in a land that has been overrun by zombie soldiers and killer bats. You walk through a large top-down world of forests, farms and a lava field, with a house you can walk into, and the other mages you meet along the way are the heart of the game. Walk up to one of them and you get a word of advice, and some of them give you something much more useful: a spell. One mage teaches you fire (and an ice shield), another a water spell.
Your health is in the top-left corner and your score in the top-right. Enemies hurt on contact, so you cannot just run through them. A spell, cast with the Space bar, damages everything inside the effect it creates, and the score goes up for each enemy you beat. Finding the right mages for the right spells is what makes the difference between a quick death and a long walk. At the end of all this there is the quest itself: one of the mages tells you that to save the world you need to find the Ancient Cup, and once you know that, finding it wins the game.
It is a small, rough and honest adventure, made in a few weeks for a contest, and it is best enjoyed as that: a free exploration of a pretty pixel-art world.
Playing it here
Click Play and wait for the world to load (about 6 MB), then click once inside the game so that it gets the keyboard, and press Enter on the title screen. The game needs the arrow keys and Space, so it is meant for a computer. Nothing is loaded from other sites. The progress is not saved: closing the page starts a new game.

Tips
Talk to everyone. The mages scattered over the map give advice and two of them give spells. You start without any, so finding a spell is the first thing to do.
Keep your distance. Enemies hurt on contact and a hit costs 10 health, so cast the spell from a little way off.
Look for the cup. It is far from where you start; the mage who explains the quest is the one dressed as royalty.

Credits and licence
Pixel Quest was written by Cory Gackenheimer for the Liberated Pixel Cup 2012, with the melonJS engine (MIT). The art is by Lanea Zimmerman, Charles Sanchez, Barbara Rivera, Luke Mehl, Daniel Eddeland and Johann Charlot, the music ("Calm Town") by Brandon, and the sound effects by Johnathan Roatch. The code is released under the GNU GPL 3 or later, and the art and music under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 licence (also under the GPL 3 or later). The version served here is the one the author sent to OpenGameArt, with a different title picture (the original showed the contest trophy, which we replaced by the same forest scene without it), and the cup of the quest is now called the Ancient Cup.
